MAYA (Movement for alternatives and Youth Awareness) a Karnataka-based development organisation working over the past 17 years towards addressing the rights of children, has been consistently focusing on the eradication of child labour. Integral to MAYA's approach is the building of community institutions and their capacities to address issues of livelihood and education.

All programs build upon MAYA's core values of collective approaches to systemic problems, as well as procesess of continual learning and reflection. MAYA's interventions are at the level of policy, social and political structures which are strongly rooted in personal and collective empowerment of the poor.

A central part of the education initiative is the Early Childhood Care and Education Programme which presently reaches out to over 6000 children through 180 community-run preschools, in the low income areas of Bangalore Urban and Bangalore Rural districts.
