MAYA's approach to resources is based on the premise that if facilitated with appropriate structures and institutional learning, communities would be enabled to seek, identify and avail of resources, suited to their context.
The organisation's role, therefore, is to facilitate processes that utilise resources locally available at the community level, while also recognising the need for external support to communities for certain aspects. To this end, local corporate houses and individuals are encouraged to contribute support (in cash or kind) to the communities. MAYA supports communities to utilise these resources judiciously and in a transparent manner. In addition, MAYA'S work also receives support from bilateral agencies and the State. However, these resources are considered supplementary to the communities' inherent capacities and resources.
From the understanding that communities can provide for themselves utilising their own strengths, MAYA does not provide free social services. MAYA believes that such activities negate communities' own abilities and potential by creating a sense of dependency. MAYA instead prefers to work on a systemic level to enable people to help themselves.
