Organisation

Since its inception in 1989 as a 2-3 member organisation to its present status of 150 full-time staff, MAYA has encouraged a transparent and flexible environment that allows for learning and growth at the individual and organisational level. The organisation has a flat, non-hierarchical structure with individuals and teams responsible for specific aspects of the interventions.

MAYA has structured itself on the basis of its two main focus areas of addressing education reform and livelihood issues of the working poor. Programme teams formed on this basis ensure an effective and focussed way of functioning through an ongoing planning and review process. Simultaneously, regular interactions and discussions are facilitated among the programme teams, to enable reflection on the inherent premise of building institutional learning and experience of communities. Discussions and decisions with regard to key issues of strategies, implementation, personnel, are facilitated by the Core Team, a supportive facilitating structure in the organisation comprising representatives of the different programmes.

MAYA is a registered society under the Indian Societies' Registration Act, governed by a Governing Council (more commonly referred to as the Board). The Board at MAYA includes individuals from diverse backgrounds (industry, medical profession, development organisation, etc) who support the organisation.
